This is a story I wrote about my father, called

The River's Roar

Sheri White

My Dad often reminded me.." I was his birthday present", I was born on December the 15th and his birthday followed on the 20th of December. My Dad was tall, towering over me at 6'4"with broad shoulders, dark brown curly hair and strikingly blue eyes. I always thought he looked like the "Duke"John Wayne. I have so many stories of him, where to start ..he was a very unusaul Individual.Who was dealt a brutal hand of the cards at the age of 18,when his Father was killed in a car wreck and at the young age of 18 he Identified his Father. My father was a only child and his relationship with his Father was very close. It was very difficult for my father to share any stories of his Father , I don't believe my Father ever stopped grieving the loss his Father.

I often went fishing with my Father, this particular story I was 5 years old, We were living in Cedar Rapids ,Iowa. The family moved from Springfield,Mo.my home town, to Iowa because of my Father's career.

This fishing trip I will never forget... I remember the Cedar River had flooded..I still remember the bags of sand along the banks and on the bridge. It had been a few days and the river started to go down. The day was sunny and warm and my Dad eagerly pushed our small boat in the river and picked me up and placed me on the wooden bench in the middle of the boat,he put the tackle box and fishing poles in and the gas can for the engine. It was warm that day and you could see how high the water had climbed up on the banks and soaked the ground.

My Dad jumped in and started the small boat engine and we took off searching for a great fishing hole..I sat facing my Dad, I had no fear of the water, I had always loved water and I felt safe with my Father always..we explored up and down the banks..I could see the bridge in the distance and could see how high the river had been by the mud on the bridge. Then all of a sudden I heard sputtering sounds from the engine , then it just stopped.. My Dad spent several minutes working to get the engine to restart..and I looked out towards the center of the river and noticed it was darker in the middle and the water was rushing swiftly, faster then close to the land..I turned back to look at my Father and by now, he had grabbed the oars and he told me in a calm tone for me to sit very still and I did..of course at the time I had no idea of the critical circumstance we were in..the boat had been pulled into the dark waters I had earlier observed, the water was rushing by so fast..I looked back at my Dad and he had both oars in the water and I'll never forget the look on his face, he was focused and I watched as he worked the oars through the water, fighting to get the boat towards the river banks. My Dad had worn his gray khakis that day and those white string tee shirts of that period in the 50s. I could see the muscles in my Father's shoulders and arms ..I watched as he put all his strength in fighting that river to let go of us..My Father was in his early 20s, fearless at that age..but as I looked into his face I could see something unfamiliar to me at the time and with each stroke of the oars cutting through the dark waters of the river trying to pull us deeper into the dark waters..It felt like a battle between my Father and the river. I felt the river's anger slapping at the sides of the boat and could hear this roar from the river. I looked up to see that we had traveled with the river a long way from where we had put the boat in at. My Father was really pulling the oars through the dark waters and you could see the intense, concerned look on his face...and in a few minutes, which seemed so much longer, I could see calmer water and the roaring sound from the middle of the river I heard was much farther away. I could see the relief on my Father's face as we grew closer to the banks..he jumped out and pulled the boat up on the muddy banks.. He picked me up and set me down beside him on the bank and started unloading the tackle box and poles and gas tank from the boat..he handed me the metal tackle box and as I stood there holding the heavy tackle box I felt myself slowly sinking down in the mud.. my Dad turned around to take the tackle box from me and he just broke out into laughter at the sight of me. I had sunk into the muddy river banks up to my knees still holding onto my Dad's tackle box...He was still laughing as he reached down to pick me up and the mud had a pretty good grip on me and then up I came with a tug from my Father with just one sock and shoe on.

I think my Dad was so relieved at getting us back to the safety of the river banks, he never noticed my missing sock and shoe and I'm sure he realized that the river had almost taken us that day, all but for the grace of God we were spared. My Dad never shared that narrow escape from the river that day,It was a day we both never spoke of. My mother asked what happen to my sock and shoe, I just replied the mud got them.

As I reflected back through the years , I recall that day just as clear and I remember the determination and strength of my Father to get us to land and safety. We were not alone in that boat that day. I know that for sure. I had many adventures with my Father through out the years. They have shaped me into the person I am today, the older I get the more I realize I am my Father's Daughter in many ways. But I am also very much my own person.
